Charles Atkinson, M.D., is an experienced surgeon with interests that cover a broad range of general surgical disease processes. He seeks to build lasting patient relationships through mutual respect and first-rate care. Dr. Atkinson was born in Philadelphia and grew up in South Jersey, where he earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. After completing his surgical residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, he found himself in Tucson practicing for the U.S. Air Force. Having completed his active-duty service as chief of general surgery at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, he entered private practice at Agave Surgical Services. During his time at Agave he served as chief of trauma services at TMC, chief of surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital and chief of surgery at TMC during the COVID-19 pandemic. After 23 years in private practice, he elected to join TMCOne as a general surgeon to better serve the TMC community and to also spend more time with his family. He works to have "a genuine interest in my patient as a person. I want us to have mutual respect for each other that goes beyond a 'physician-patient' relationship so that we become partners in care." Dr. Atkinson is committed to treating his patients to ensure they can live life to its fullest. "Life is all about experiences," he said, "and in the end, patients will value those experiences the most." By providing a "hands-on" approach, Dr. Atkinson works to provide quality and speedy care so patients can return to spending time with their friends and family.
